Job Description

American Jewish World Service (AJWS) has experienced significant
growth in recent years. With a current budget of nearly $50 million,
the organization’s global financial operations have become
increasingly complex. AJWS is seeking a Director of Finance to lead
the fiscal operations of the organization and scale up the function to
bring the organization’s financial management capacity in line with
the increasing complexity of its operating environment.

Reporting to the Vice President for Finance & Administration, the
Director of Finance will oversee a team of 6-7 staff including a
Controller, and be responsible for the planning and oversight of the
finance department with an increased focus on strengthening and
enhancing:

Financial planning and monitoring activities
Efficiency of the data tracking, analysis and financial reporting functions
Cash management, short-term investing, and maximization of exchange
rates in foreign transactionsInternational financial operations

Responsibilities

Drive annual budget development and monitoring process
Direct development and implementation of enhanced financial
strategies, analysis and systems
Provide fiscal oversight and management for accounting function
Formulate, recommend and implement sound fiscal policies, procedures
and controls
Conduct monthly budget monitoring meetings with program and other departments
Oversight and monitoring of internal controls and fiscal functions;
ensure compliance with funding restrictions
Enhance financial reporting functions including, but not limited to
the preparation of financial statements, forecasting, cash flow,
actual vs. budget reports & analyses
Analyze financial reports and report to the Board and senior
management on a monthly basis
In partnership with the Controller, manage all external financial
reporting including but not limited to annual audit, IRS 990 and A133
compliance.
Design, implement and oversee an RFP and procurement system for the organization
Develop effective policies, systems and procedures for financial
management, reporting and auditing
Ensure all finance policies and procedures are documented,
communicated and reflect current practices
Implement projects that increase the efficiency of the financial function
Other administrative activities including, but not limited to: approve
payroll, release wire transfers, approve consultant agreements,
approve checks; and negotiate vendor and bank relationships.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have 10-12 years of financial management
experience; non-profit sector and/or global experience strongly
desired
Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting; MBA/CPA a plus
Knowledge and experience with accounting and GAAP
Proven ability to lead and be a visionary
Excellent skills in problem solving and critical analysis
Strong business instincts; able to quickly identify problems,
synthesize a variety of factors to make effective and practical
decisions and develop an appropriate course of action.
Understands programmatic activity and has the ability to convey
information to people with varying levels of financial expertise
Clear and effective written and oral communicator
Excellent presentation and organizational skills
Ability to manage difficult situations with tact and diplomacy
Ability to collaborate and build consensus internally and externally
Ability to work well in teams as well as independently
Ability to pay attention to detail and to work well under pressure
Proven high standards of performance, eager to pursue aggressive
goals, and works hard/smart to achieve them. Must be persistent,
decisive, resourceful, proactive, and results-oriented.
Proficient in Microsoft Office; financial modeling & accounting
packages; knowledge of MIP a plus
